The Scent Reset

The Scent Reset — your FREE guide to using scent for calm, clarity and better sleep

Three five-minute rituals — morning, afternoon and evening — that use scent as a deliberate cue for your nervous system.

The Scent Reset is a practical introduction to aromachology — the science of how specific fragrance compounds affect the way you feel. Not theory. Not ritual for its own sake. A short, evidence-led guide you can start with scents you may already own, and a two-week plan for building the habit.

1. Three rituals, five minutes each — morning, afternoon, evening

2. The five compounds behind them, explained in plain language

3. Built on published aromachology research, with its limits stated honestly

Based on published aromachology research — not tradition, not trend

Four short chapters. Three rituals. One honest account of the science.

The guide moves from the research to the practice and back again. You will finish it understanding how your own nervous system responds to scent — and with three simple rituals you can keep using long after you have read it.

CHAPTER 1 — WHAT THE SCIENCE ACTUALLY SAYS

Why smell reaches emotion and memory faster than any other sense, and how olfactory signals influence the calm-and-recover branch of your nervous system. The anatomy, explained plainly.

CHAPTER 2 — THE COMPOUNDS WORTH KNOWING

The five aroma compounds with the strongest evidence base for calm, focus and sleep — linalool, linalyl acetate, beta-caryophyllene, alpha-pinene and cedrol — and what each is best used for.

CHAPTER 3 — THREE RITUALS FOR THREE MOMENTS

A five-minute morning reset, an afternoon clarity break and an evening wind-down. Each pairs a scent with a state, so that over time the scent itself becomes the cue.

CHAPTER 4 — GETTING STARTED

A two-week plan for building the habit without overwhelm: begin with a single ritual, notice what shifts, and add from there.

These exercisesare inhalation only. Do not apply any essential oil in this guide to skin.

The three rituals at a glance

Morning reset (7–9am)

Bright, green and woody notes — pine, rosemary, bergamot FCF — to support the natural morning rise in alertness without reaching first for a stimulant.

SAFETY NOTE:
If you use bergamot in the morning ritual, choose furanocoumarin-free bergamot only, labelled FCF or bergapten-free. Standard bergamot oil contains bergapten, which is phototoxic: on skin and then in sunlight it can cause burns and lasting pigmentation. The rituals in this guide are for inhalation and candles — they do not ask you to apply any essential oil to skin.

Afternoon clarity break (2–4pm)

A crisp, green-woody profile — Scots pine, rosemary, petitgrain — to steady focus through the mid-afternoon dip.

Evening wind-down (8–10pm).

Warm, resinous, grounding notes — lavender, clary sage, cedarwood — to signal to the body that the day is ending.

Why aromachology — and not aromatherapy?

We want to be precise about what The Scent Reset is and is not.

It is not a therapeutic programme. The Scent Reset does not treat anxiety, depression, insomnia or any medical condition. If you are experiencing any of these, please speak to your GP or a qualified health professional.

What it is: a practical introduction to aromachology — the scientific study of how fragrance compounds affect psychology and behaviour. The effects described in this guide are documented in peer-reviewed research. They are psychological and sensory, not physiological or medical.

For adults over sixty who are curious about evidence-based approaches to their own wellbeing — and sceptical of the overclaiming that fills the wellness industry — this distinction matters. We make it because we respect the people who read our work.
